The beauty of impermanence in Bath

Some Tibetan monks have been visiting Bath and since Tuesday, the 14th of October, they have been making a beautiful sand mandala which has finally been completed today. The beauty and the vibrancy of it can not be felt unless it is seen in reality, but you can get still an idea from the pictures below.

Tomorrow morning it is going to be destroyed to be scattered in the Avon river. So much hard work and care to make it to last just a few days. Well, it is not really destroyed, it is simply going to start a new cycle in the Avon river. This mind set and attitude is very much in harmony with sustainability, as it is based on working in a way that creates new cycles that can sustain the endless cycles of life.

A mollusc, the olympics and stress

What have these 3 things in common for goodness sake? Well, there is a very unique and sophisticated test based on a common mollusc that is capable of detecting blood oxidative stress in minutes. This device was used by the British Olympic sailing team to manage their training based on the information provided by this test. In fact this test shows how continous training can lead to stress that can lead to free radicals that can lead to a weak immune system and therefore viral infections that can prevent athletes from winning their medals. And the team using this system did win 4 golds, 2 silvers and one bronze, their best ever result!
This analytical technique, developed by lady scientist Dr Jan Knight in Plymouth, is so fascinating as it is based on piddock, a mollusc that glows in presence of free radicals. This makes "visible"  and also measurable the otherwise invisible free radicals and to decide wether it is time to have a rest or time to train. The implications behind the findings of this test are quite major as it kind of contradicts the common thought that the harder we push the body the more fit it gets. Wild animals bones and free range humans

A few weeks ago I met a very interesting lady from Germany with the hobby of making pendants and other utensils from animals bones. The amazing thing she told me is that when she uses bones coming from animals that have been kept in captivity, she has no problem working with them, but when she uses bones from wild animals (her husband hunts wild deers in the black forest, very beautiful animals but far too many for the ecosystem to cope with) her tools tend to break as they are much harder!
These animals get a lot of exercise and also get a lot of fresh air, sunlight and natural food, and I was thinking that probably our bones would be much stronger if we went more free range. Meaning not just natural food but also more fresh air and exercise. Anybody interested in becoming a free range human?
